Health information technologies have transformed significantly the provision of healthcare in the modern world. Health information technologies have enhanced the efficiency, cost and quality of care given to patients. Nurses play the essential role of ensuring the successful implementation of health technologies for use in patient care. Nurses ensure that the technologies that are embraced align with their expectations as well as the mission and vision of their organization. Therefore, this research paper examines the role of graduate level nurse in system development and implementation. The analysis examines the various roles, as seen in the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
The graduate level nurse plays a significant role in the planning and requirements definition phase of the SDLC. Planning and requirements phase of the SDLC focuses on the development of the scope of the system to be adopted as well as the problems that it seeks to address in the organization. The phase also encompasses the examination of the possible alternatives that can be used to ensure that the organizational needs are met. The organizational stakeholders undertake feasibility tests to determine the applicability of the system and the resources that might be needed to ensure the successful implementation of the system (Sipes, 2019). The graduate-level nurse therefore plays a number of roles in undertaking these activities. Firstly, the nurse works with the inter-disciplinary team members in performing needs assessment in the organization. The information from needs assessment informs the reasons for the adoption of the system in the organization. The nurse also works with the inter-disciplinary team members in developing the deliverables of the system implementation and resources that are needed. This role is important as it provides insights into the feasibility of the project (Houston et al., 2018). The nurse also works with the team members in establishing the system requirements alongside testing whether the requirements will facilitate the realization of the goals of the organization.
The graduate-level nurse also plays critical roles in the analysis phase of the SDLC. The analysis phase of the SDLC encompasses the development of requirements for the project and categorizing them based on their need. The nurse and the inter-professional team members work together in determining the most critical needs that must be addressed through the adoption of the system and prioritizing them in the system adoption process (Saba & McCormick, 2021). The assessment phase also encompasses the development and assessment of the available alternatives that can be adopted to ensure successful implementation of the system. The information obtained from the analysis phase is used to develop the recommendations that should be considered for the successful adoption of the system in the organization (Murphy et al., 2017). Therefore, the graduate level nurse engaged in a number of activities in this phase that include developing list of priorities for the project, alternatives that should be considered and recommendations for ensuring optimum outcomes of the project are achieved.
The graduate-level nurse also plays critical roles in the design phase of the SDLC. The design phase in the SDLC focuses on the determination of the software, hardware, data protection, user interface, and data retrieval needs of the system to be adopted in the organization. There is also the development of the security and networking needs of the system to be implemented in the organization. The activities undertaken in the design phase lead to development of the architecture or structure of the system to be implemented. The graduate-level nurse therefore ensures that the system needs such as software, hardware, user interface, data protection and retrieval promote the desired efficiency in the use of the system (Hussey & Kennedy, 2021). The graduate-level nurse also ensure that the needs of the nurses in the development of the system such as system purpose and interactions are incorporated by the inter-professional team members.
Implementation is the other phase of the SDLC. Implementation phase is characterized by the actual use of

the developed system into practice. The graduate-level nurse ensures that the system is used effectively in undertaking organizational tasks. The nurse works with the inter-professional team members and other staffs in monitoring the effectiveness and efficiency of the system. The feedback or observations made from the use of the system in the organization is used to customize and improve the system performance. The graduate level nurse therefore undertakes vital roles such as evaluating the system effectiveness and taking improvement actions, re-designing the system to achieve the desired outcomes and collecting and providing feedback to the team about the system effectiveness and efficiency (Sipes, 2019). In addition, the graduate-level nurse ensures that the adopters of the system have the desired knowledge and skills to ensure the successful use of the system in achieving the set organizational goals.
The last phase in SDLC is post-implementation support. Post-implementation support phase is the process where the inter-professional teams work together in ensuring continuous system improvement, maintenance and support. The aim of this step is to ensure the sustained use of the system to achieve the desired organizational goals. The graduate-level nurse plays a number of roles in this stage such as collecting and providing information about the issues affecting the effectiveness of the system. The nurse also works with the implementers of the system by providing them the support that they need in the process (Saba & McCormick, 2021). The nurse also utilizes information from the continuous evaluation to strengthen the effectiveness of the system for its acceptance for use in the organization.
Overall, graduate-level nurse has critical roles to play in the implementation of new systems in health organizations. The roles that they play can be seen in their need in the various stages of SDLC. Health organizations should therefore consider the incorporation of nurse informaticists into the system development and implementation process. Through it, the desired goals of system adoption in health organizations are achieved.
